Jan. 5, 1956 – Fullback Fred Cone, the NFL’s leading field goal kicker in 1955, quits the Packers to coach for University Military School in Mobile, Ala. “We were aware Cone was looking for a coaching job when the season ended,” says Packers GM Verne Lewellen. “He certainly will be a hard man to replace.” By August, Cone returns and plays two more seasons in Green Bay.
